Penrith Bingo Hall Saved From Closure
Although not as many people are going to bingo halls with the regularity that they used to, few people want to see the bingo fun taken away from the local community. Bingo is not just a place for people to socialise with friends and get out of the house; it can be a strong link to the past for many people.
Bingo halls hold a special place in the heart of many people and no doubt a lot of people will be able to recall a lot of great times and memories from their younger days. It is also fair to say that many of the traditional bingo halls look tremendous and it would be a shame to hand them over to more modern businesses that may completely change the look and feel of these buildings.
It looked as though the numbers were up for Penrith bingo
The Lonsdale Alhambra cinema and bingo hall in Penrith has been around for over 100 years but back in January it appeared its days were numbered. The hall owner said that the lease of the building would not be renewed and that plans were underway to close the cinema and bingo halls and rent out the entire building in one go.
Even though the bingo element of the business has not been overly busy in the past few years, this announcement sparked a reaction in the people of Penrith and a public campaign was initiated to save the building. This has been achieved with a new lease being produced which will cover the next ten years.
