Lotto Winner Still Plays Bingo
If you became an overnight millionaire, would it change your life? It is all too common for winners to say that it won’t change them but in the long run, if it is a large amount of money, it seems hard to think that it wouldn’t have some impact on your life. Even if it was just changing the way that people reacted to you and engaged with you, it is likely that there would be some impact in your life. For Irish Lotto winner, Kathleen McLaughlin from Carraigmaquigley in Redcastle, her big break came at the start of December 2011. The 78 year old woman, who is a grandmother to 28, picked up 2.6 million euros in the big draw.
It turns out that life has been grand but one big problem came with the fact that since she picked up the tax-free sum, her state pension has been stopped by the government. A lot of people would say that this is quite right and Kathleen herself states that she has no real need for the money but many would argue that there is a point of principle. Working hard all of your days entitles you to a state pension and many think that she is as entitled to the money as anyone else is.
Bingo remains the big draw
In saying that, it seems that life is carrying on as normal in all other ways for the winner. Kathleen can still be found in her local bingo hall 6 nights a week! You might think that she doesn’t need to win any more money given the lotto cash she has stored away but it seems as though the bingo is not just about playing for big cash. There is definitely a social aspect to playing bingo with friends and on her first night at the hall since winning the lotto prize, she made sure that all of her friends bingo books were bought for them. In a twist that some would say was karma; Kathleen was the only player amongst the group who managed a win, picking up 20 euros on the night!
The fact that people can still carry on with their lives as normal after such a huge win is testimony to the fact that money doesn’t have to change you but it can certainly make life a lot easier. It also shows that bingo is something to be enjoyed on a number of levels.
