Barrow Bingo Hall Calls It A Day

Even though the loss of a bingo hall can be upsetting for players and the local community, there is often a bigger casualty when a bingo hall closes its doors. The hall may be a great social aspect for many people but a bingo hall can often be a place of employment for many people. Losing a job is rough at any time but losing a job during the current economic climate can be extremely upsetting. Sadly this is the case for 14 people with the Pavilion Bingo Hall in Barrow closing its doors for the final time.

Bingo job losses are hard to take

The 14 people who lost their jobs came from a mixture of full time and part time position. Even a small bingo hall can have a number of people working behind the scenes to ensure that the club remains open and in a small community, 14 jobs is a lot to lose. This sort of closure may not get the news headlines but it is definitely something that will have a wider impact on the local community than merely leaving local people without a game of bingo.

No more bingo in Barrow

The announcement that the hall was closing down was made from the stage on Sunday night so the players and staff learned at the same time. Even though a lot of people were upset by the news, it wasn’t as if it came as a complete shock. The declining attendance numbers for the hall meant that the financial situation was becoming bleaker with every passing month. It is not as if the Barrow hall is alone in struggling to find money to stay afloat.

The same old stories were wheeled out as to why the bingo hall was no longer able to stay afloat. The government were once again questioned with the fact that bingo halls pay a higher level of tax than some other gaming establishments and industries being questioned. There may not be a massive difference between 15% and 21% but it can often seem like a lot when it is money that could be put to better use. No one is saying that if the tax rates were amended that all of these bingo halls could be saved or reopened but it may have provided a level of breathing space for the halls. This is a matter that looks set to run and run into the future.
